Picture, if you will, the Old Market in the spring of 1970. While it was certainly beyond its infancy, it was far from bustling. A single restaurant, two galleries and a bookstore, quite a few imaginative and charming shops -- these were all.

Into this alluring vacuum came the flash of an idea, inspired by a visit to Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown - the original of all authentic Old Town areas in America. Add to Georgetown a happy recollection of the elegant and sophisticated pubs of London, with their sociability, charm and delectable food, and you have the concept behind M's Pub.

This big room had been a discouraging sight, though it had made a fine warehouse of forty years. Plywood covered the stairs, walls were crumbling, the arches had been bricked up, and the only light came from naked bulbs suspended from a ceiling festooned with cobwebs.

Yet the space felt just right, giving an impression of both spaciousness and intimacy. The basic warehouse architecture was respected by the designers. Ceiling and walls were restored and painted, the arches filled with glass, the island bar and the cabinet kitchen constructed on the spot. Clear glass, mirrors, brass, and white walls bright with reflected light brought new beauty to a room that was essentially beautiful to begin with. All furnishings were ordered or designed especially for the place, except for the candelabras, which came from an old church in northern Nebraska.

We opened for business on January 18, 1973, to an enthusiastic clientele which we have tried never to disappoint. The present owners cherish the Pub, and have greatly embellished the menu which remains imaginative and unusual.

Is it a restaurant or is it a Pub? Is it, perhaps, closer to being a European cafe? You, dear customer, may be the judge. For it is you who rule in this establishment.

M's Starter Plate -- Oven-roasted garlic, marinated mushrooms and a crusty baguette served with lemon-basil aioli. 7.50

Smoked Salmon Mousseline -- Savory combination of cream cheese, smoked salmon and pesto with a crust of seasoned bread crumbs. Served with tomatoes, egg, cucumbers, red onion and lahvosh. 9.50

Wine Contemplation Plate -- An assortment of domestic and imported cheeses served with fresh fruits, lahvosh and a velvety French pâté spread. (For Two) 11.50

Crab Cakes-- mini crab cakes dusted with cornmeal and topped with a zesty roasted red pepper & cracked mustard aioli. 9.95

Boiled Shrimp -- 1/2 pound of peeled shrimp served over ice with cocktail sauce and lemon. 12.95

Artichoke -- Whole steamed artichoke served hot with drawn butter, lemon-basil aioli, and curry sauce. Available in-season only. 6.95

Baked Brie en Croûte -- Soft brie cheese baked in puff pastry with slivered almonds. Served with apples. 8.50

M's House Salad -- Crisp greens, sundried tomato, bell pepper, red onion, sunflower seeds, romano cheese and creamy dill dressing. 3.95

Spinach Salad -- Tender spinach embellished with red onion, crumbled bacon, tomato wedges, mushrooms and sliced egg served with a choice of warm bacon or creamy dill dressing. Small. 5.25 Large. 8.50

Caesar Salad -- Hearty romaine lettuce with Romano cheese, garlic croutons, and our classic Caesar dressing. Small. 4.95 Large. 7.50

Steak Salad -- Our Caesar salad topped with grilled beef tenderloin tips, red potatoes and red onion. 10.95 Substitute chicken tenderloins. 9.50

Thai Chicken Salad -- Marinated grilled chicken with crisp greens, julienne vegetables and soy nuts, all tossed with a peanut dressing then garnished with tomato wedges and sesame seeds. 8.95

Warm Duck Salad -- Roasted duck on a bed of spinach with blue cheese, walnuts tomato wedges, julienne vegetables, red onion, and warm bacon dressing. 11.95

Salmon Salad -- Grilled salmon filet on a bed of spinach with sliced egg, scallions, cucumbers, artichoke hearts, tomato and balsamic vinaigrette on the side. 12.50

Chicken Tenderloin Salad -- Grilled chicken tenderloins on fresh greens with tomato, sliced egg, cucumber, scallions and mushrooms. Served with a side of romano-green peppercorn dressing. 9.50

Shrimp Salad -- 1/4 pound of peeled shrimp on a bed of fresh greens with sliced egg, tomato, avocado, red onion, artichoke hearts with a sundried tomato and roasted garlic vinaigrette. 11.95

Cobb Salad -- Crisp greens tossed with turkey, bacon, tomato, egg, blue cheese, mushrooms and roasted hazelnut vinaigrette, then finished with a wedge of avocado. 9.50

Chicken Salad -- Chunks of roasted chicken breast tossed with celery, red onion, pecans and grapes in a sour cream dill dressing. Served with a freshly baked cinnamon roll. 8.50

Stuffed Hamburger -- Eight ounces of grilled lean ground beef stuffed with Swiss cheese, green peppers and mushrooms. 7.95

Kosher Hot Dog -- All beef, broiled and served on a hoagie bun with sides of relish, mustard and ketchup. Sauerkraut served by request. 5.75

Carrot Dog -- Steamed, marinated whole carrot, grilled and served on a whole wheat hoagie with lettuce, tomato, relish, stone ground mustard and sauerkraut. 4.95

M’s Falafel -- Our version is two grilled chick-pea cakes presented on a toasted pita with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, Calamata olives and spicy yogurt sauce with your choice of soup. 8.50

Bratwurst Plate -- Two beer-boiled bratwurst grilled and served with onions, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes du jour, and honey-mustard sauce. 9.95

Thai Pork Satay -- Marinated pork tenderloin char-broiled and served with rice, cucumber relish and peanut sauce. 8.95
